–

Neville Brody has just opened his latest exhibition in Japan with the Ginza Graphic Gallery (GGG) in Tokyo. The exhibition featuring mostly new or recent work will run from Friday 4th June to Friday 28th June 2010.

Designed as one major installation by Brody, the exhibition includes new work from his Free Thought series (2010); posters from LUST a project with James Victore in New York (2009); work from recent editions of Arena Homme + (2009/10); a The Freedom Space installation originally produced for the Design Museum in London (2009); experimental type and output from FUSE; Wallpaper* and GQ cover work (2009); a wall dedicated to the Anti-Design Festival coming to London this September (2010) and iconic work with Japanese clients and in Japan over the last 10 years. To see some images of the exhibition log onto our flicker site<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/50970621@N04/4684837536/in/set-72157624236684516/"target="_tab">here.

Alongside this, Brody also collaborated with RCA undergraduate Jo Glover to produce Type Manifesto. The project mixed Brody’s words from a lecture given at La Ciudad de las Ideas in Mexico (2009) with Glover’s experimental typographic approach and passion for ‘hands on’ design. The project will also form part of Glover’s final project at the RCA where Brody will shortly become Head of Design and Communication. Neville Brody has been appointed Head of the Department of Communication Art & Design at the Royal College of Art.

Research Studios are pleased to announce that Neville Brody, Creative Director, has been appointed Head of the Department of Communication Art & Design at the Royal College of Art, taking up the position on 1 January 2011.

Following speculation and a fair amount of coverage online last week, the RCA made the following statement in confirming the appointment today;

“Brody’s appointment demonstrates the Royal College of Art’s commitment to embrace the creative challenges and opportunities in the rapidly moving discipline of communication art and design in the twenty first century.”

“Neville Brody is both an eloquent advocate and a superb practitioner,“ said Dr Paul Thompson, Rector of the Royal College of Art. “His design talent traverses so many different media – traditional print and typography through to online, motion graphics, and packaging. He is one of the most influential designers of his generation and perfectly captures the interdisciplinary ethos of the Department of Communication Art & Design.”

Over the last few years Brody has, alongside running Research Studios, increasingly taken a very keen interest in design and creative sector education in the UK. The appointment to the RCA marks a very interesting pivot point between dialogue (he has had with students, educators and industry) and truly getting involved in shaping world-leading programmes at the RCA. A delighted Brody comments;

“The Royal College of Art sits at the threshold of a new and vital moment in communications history, an extraordinary time and one that will deeply affect all of us. This appointment is an amazing opportunity to bring together several ideas and objectives, and to help the RCA take up a defining and influential place within this rapidly-changing world.

I am excited by this possibility of joining of the dots, of combining the RCA’s deep sense of history, craft and experience with a dynamic, relevant and exploratory approach to art and design communications.

The position is a great honour and challenge. The RCA is a centre of excellence for art and design, and is the de facto natural home for all visual communications.”

Neville gave his D&AD Presidents Lecture last night entitled “Wanker or Genius” to a packed house at the Logan Hall in London. Questions were tweeted from near and far to help steer a conversation which was warmly received as more a call for a design education/industry revolution than retrospective. The conversation touched on recent work, creativity, education and politics and a filmed version of it will be posted here soon.

Our post before the talk;

Be part of Neville’s D&AD Presidents Lecture tomorrow by “tweeting” a question through the Creative Review twitter feed using the hashtag #Brodydandad or, if you’re not into twitter, you can post your question on the CR blog.

The lecture will be more of a conversation between Brody and design writer Adrian Shaughnessy. Twitters will be streaming live to a monitor during the lecture with the opportunity for both Neville and Adrian able to pick out the best questions and potentially steer the conversation.

The audience of the now sold out lecture which supports the D&AD will also get the opportunity to take the vote with special Wanker/Genius flash cards. The cards use two 2009 Brody fonts, Popaganda and Peace Version 2 printed by our friends at The Colourhouse.

Neville Brody is to give President’s Lecture for the D&AD with a title inspired by comments posted about him on Creative Review’s blog earlier in the year which divided opinion about not only his work but the man himself. This will be a unique opportunity to see Brody in conversation with designer and writer Adrian Shaughnessy.

Joining design luminaries Michael Wolff and Paula Scher in this year’s series each lecture supports the D&AD, an educational charity, in continuing it’s work, much of which helps young and emerging designers. You can find out more about the series here. or buy tickets online here

Neville Brody has created ‘Unentitled’ as part of Blank Canvas an Arts/Charity project where 100% of the profits will go to Amnesty International and The Big Issue Foundation.

Each fine artist or designer involved in the project was given a Pup Tent, originally devised to give soldiers in the field temporary housing, to create a unique artwork that will highlight homelessness and displacement around the world. The tents will be exhibited at the Big Chill Festival 09 and other venues over the course of the year when they will finally be auctioned in aid of charity. You can find out more about the project here >

More images of the tent at the Big Chill Festival will be coming here soon.

Other artists and designers involved in the project include Sir Peter Blake, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk, Vivienne Westwood and Rachel Whiteread.
