FUSE Comp

London, UK 1998

Before commissioning RS, this highly respected UK Newspaper already had an established online presence, but it had been superseded by several of its rivals in terms of design, functionality and content.

Working hand-in-hand with the editorial department, we created a unique modular system based around ‘blocks’ placed together on a strict grid.

These blocks could be used as ‘containers’ for pure colour, image or type. They become flexible anchor points to which the rest of the page was composed.

The site consisted of many subsections, know as the Unlimited network, some of which were often complete websites in themselves.
These ‘micro’ sites needed to retain their own separate identity, whilst simultaneously appearing to belong to the ‘whole’ that was the Guardian Unlimited brand.

Since this site was launched in 1998 it has won many awards for its design and content.

Please note that the online website is constantly mantained and developed by TheGuardian following original design guidelines.
