Research Studios were asked to be part of the Anti Design Festival by hosting a one day workshop which we entitled ANARCHY/apathy. Core to our day were the 6 questions we asked to the visitors who came to the space on Redchurch Street, Shoreditch (London) to gauge whether people were anarchic or apathetic…

01- What do you own that you could not live without?
02- What is more interesting (show them a tabloid/celebrity image and a news/story)
03- Who is your hero?
04- Why? (in 1 or 2 sentences please)
05- If you could change anything what would it be?
06- How do you rate this event with 1 being apathetic and 10 being anarchic

…the answers were designed, printed and displayed on our answer wall in the space. You can download a PDF of a selection of the answers from <a href="http://www.researchstudios.com/ANARCHY-apathy.pdf"target="_tab">here
–

We also had an iPad installed with Research Studios’ Granimator pack were visitors could create their own message creations which were projected during the event.

Are we anarchic or are we apathetic? That's the question that Research Studios asked on Sunday 26th of September during our one day workshop at the Anti Design Festival.

–

Are we anarchic or are we apathetic?

That’s the question that Research Studios asked on Sunday 26th of September during our one day workshop at the Anti Design Festival. There were questionnaires, stickers, pens, laptops, printers and ipads to help us explore the statement with visitors to the space. It wasn’t scientific but we had a lot of fun engaging and interacting with people to create a vibrant output of opinion.

The Research Studios event was broken down into several core elements:

We had 6 simple questions for the public to respond to about things that matter, people who are important and their motivation to be apathetic or anarchic. Once people had completed the questions we added their answers to our low-fi yet highly graphic ‘Poll Wall’ to create a visual representation of the answers.

Question wall

01- What do you own that you could not live without?
02- What is more interesting (show them a tabloid/celebrity image and a news/story)
03- Who is your hero?
04- Why? (in 1 or 2 sentences please)
05- If you could change anything what would it be?
06- How do you rate this event with 1 being apathetic and 10 being anarchic

We created a huge world map and another massive timeline for people to sticker, comment on and add too.

A few weeks before the event we put out an open submission statement to ask people to submit posters exploring the themes of Anarchy and Apathy. The ‘Poster Wall’ in the space displayed and for those that didn’t have time to do it before, asked people to add to this collection by creating new posters using the materials provided.

You can see some more photographs of the day on our <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/researchstudios/collections/72157625051450080/"target="_tab">Flickr account

There is also a second post where you can see the results of the questions, and also the Granimator screens that were created on the iPad during our ANARCHY/apathy workshop.

Neville Brody appears on the BBC's Newsnight to debate infographics

Neville Brody appeared on the BBC’s Newsnight to debate infographics with curator of <a href="http://www.informationisbeautiful.net"target="_tab">informationisbeautiful.net and author of The Visual Miscellaneum David McCandless. The production team on the programme wanted a polemic debate around the subject which you can watch <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00tdqx8/Newsnight_09_08_2010/?t=26m05s"target="_tab">here. It has certainly got the creative community talking and debating the points made by Brody and McCandless during the programme – a rare opportunity for graphic design to have a platform on a major news/politics programme.

In response to the debate Brody and the Research Studios team loved this info-graphic produced by Toby Bradbury of <a href="http://www.mrlerone.com/words/"target="_tab">mrlerone.com which seems the perfect tonic to the debate. See the full size version <a href="http://www.mrlerone.com/words/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/neville-vs-david.jpg"target="_tab">here.

A couple of weeks ago saw the culmination of the 2010 D&AD Student Design Awards campaign by Research Studios and, as promised in a post earlier in the year, we wanted to share the work we had completed with you. Hosted at Spitalfields Market (London) the infographic theme was applied to both further print materials, environment graphics, playful way-finding schemes (a new take on the golf sale sign!!), rich media showreels and presentation animations.

Defined by the D&AD as one of their most successful campaigns and events to-date, several of the Research Studios team enjoyed an afternoon of seeing the next wave of new young creative industry talent and the opportunity to meet with educators and industry in support of the invaluable work the D&AD, an educational charity, undertake.

Perhaps one the most successful elements was the D&AD Student Awards newspaper which was free to all enabling the charity to give more space and exposure to the successful students’ work and reach greater numbers with its free distribution.

We wanted to include a separate story for our D&AD Student Awards newspaper which proved a great success at this year’s D&AD Student Awards.

With a client publication brief to give more space and impact to each category, bring vitality to the publication, add context to how important the awards are and get the message out further and wider than before; a newspaper seemed the perfect approach this year. The empty dispensers and much thumbed copies clutched by the students, award attendees, passers by in Spitalfields Market (London) and very happy clients at the D&AD gave us a warm fuzzy feeling of a job well done.

Research Studios has begun rolling out the new look material for the D&AD student awards. The infographic theme has been applied to both print and digital materials as the call for entries to both tutors and students builds over the next couple of months. As promised in an earlier post on this blog we wanted to share it with you.

Core to the campaign are the postcard call for entries and a new approach to engaging both tutors and students with a striking double-sided poster “calling tutors with extra oomph” for the academic audience and “wanted students with excess talent” developed on the client side.

Research Studios will be working with the team as the campaign develops and on the materials for both closing entries and the awards night collateral. More to follow on this blog at a later date.
