There is still time to catch a Smile for London – short 20 second films or animations designed to “make people smile” which will be screened at various tube locations up until this Friday 28th January. Brody alongside Jeremy Boxer of Vimeo, Shane Walter of onedotzero, author Stephen Bayley and Gavin Lucas of Creative Review each selected their five favourite competition submissions to be screened.

The Jury’s selected shorts also sit alongside a curated selection of more established artists and film makers – including Anish Kapoor, Airside, Aardman Animation, Jon Burgerman, Pete Fowler, Saam Farahmand who were invited to take part in the project.

.Net awards are nominated by the public and then a shortlist voted on by the public to create the 3 finalists in each category. Winners and commendations are then decided on by a panel of over 100 industry judges. You can find out more about the 2010 awards and .Net here.

Research Studios were asked to be part of the Anti Design Festival by hosting a one day workshop which we entitled ANARCHY/apathy. Core to our day were the 6 questions we asked to the visitors who came to the space on Redchurch Street, Shoreditch (London) to gauge whether people were anarchic or apathetic…

01- What do you own that you could not live without?
02- What is more interesting (show them a tabloid/celebrity image and a news/story)
03- Who is your hero?
04- Why? (in 1 or 2 sentences please)
05- If you could change anything what would it be?
06- How do you rate this event with 1 being apathetic and 10 being anarchic

…the answers were designed, printed and displayed on our answer wall in the space. You can download a PDF of a selection of the answers from here

We also had an iPad installed with Research Studios’ Granimator pack were visitors could create their own message creations which were projected during the event.

Think you might be bored over the bank holiday weekend?! To celebrate the launch of ‘Double Dip’ on the Granimator iPad app we are offering our clients, friends and contacts the opportunity to get our pack for free.

From 6pm today (Friday 28th August) till 9am on Tuesday 31st August you can download the pack for free. After that its £1.19, not much we know, but its a small gift we wanted to give you.

Research Studios have been collaborating with the lovely folk at ustwo on an ‘artists’ pack for their creative iPad App Granimator. Our pack, ‘Double Dip’ ––which plays with experimental typography–– is the product of five different designers and involved the creation of five unique typefaces. The official launch will be a special event at London’s Regent Street Apple Store on Thursday 26th August between 7.30pm and 8.30pm. James Nelson, one of our team, will be talking there about our work and the pack we have created.

Defined by the D&AD as one of their most successful campaigns and events to-date, several of the Research Studios team enjoyed an afternoon of seeing the next wave of new young creative industry talent and the opportunity to meet with educators and industry in support of the invaluable work the D&AD, an educational charity, undertake.

Perhaps one the most successful elements was the D&AD Student Awards newspaper which was free to all enabling the charity to give more space and exposure to the successful students’ work and reach greater numbers with its free distribution.

MFY core logo and personalities

Research Studios has begun the roll out of a new look for musical organisation, Music for Youth, who provide young musicians with the platform of performance opportunities in a host of public events; from local venues to prestigious locations such as the Royal Albert Hall London or the O2 in Birmingham. Music for Youth also offers young performers the opportunity to develop their skills with workshops and other unique opportunities to collaborate and learn with top named performers, musicians, conductors and music educationalists.

This year Music for Youth turns 40 and the charity wanted Research Studios to re-design their identity to communicate more effectively with its core audience of young performers and loyal organisers/supporters, as well as broaden their language to reflect the diverse range of musical genres it covers. Furthermore, it also wanted to enhance its ability to evolve and strengthen its digital presence. Whilst the new identity beds in the logo’s core iteration will be constant but the new personalities will begin to roll out after the first year (highlighted in this animation). Research Studios are currently working with the organisation on their website and programme of activities including the forthcoming National Festival held in Birmingham from 5th to 10th July 2010.

Neville Brody and Research Studios have collaborated closely with the BBC to redesign their online Global Visual Language (GVL) and take the organisation and its users into a more compelling digital space. At the heart of the project was the joint desire to bring joined-up cross platform concepts and experiences to users of bbc.co.uk and bbc.com now and into the future.

Having been appointed after winning a competitive pitch in August 2009 by Head of User Experience and Design, Brownyn Van Der Mere, Research Studios worked closely with project lead Ben Gammon and teams gathered from across the BBC. Neville and the team have collaborated in a spectrum of design, interaction and strategic challenges. From working together on the strategy and philosophy of the project to the nuts and bolts of a GVL (typography, colour palette, iconography etc). Further work was contributed to look at interaction and developing compelling experiences within the new GVL. During the project Research Studios also worked with internal teams on News and Sport, Homepage, Search and Search Products, Embedded Media Player (EMP) Global Navigation and Mobile. The studio are currently in the process of consolidating all the work into a styleguide that can then be used across the organisation.

Neville Brody, creative director of Research Studios, comments;

“We are very proud to have helped create the new Global Visual Language for the BBC. This is probably the best job in the world! To have been so intrinsically involved in changing and growing the design and philosophy of the BBC’s digital offering has been amazing. To be asked to do this is a huge honour. The BBC is seen globally as a trusted source of information, and as a beacon of engineering and story-telling excellence.

Over the last few months we have worked a huge amount of hours together and produced hundreds of in-depth explorations in order to arrive at what appears to be the simplest of solutions. Together with the BBC we have, to-date, established the central philosophy and core building blocks or DNA, and, we hope, to continue to work closely with the organisation in depth across differing and different BBC sites in order to expand the language and establish its scalability.”

The new GVL will not be an overnight rollout, but will begin to appear across core properties within bbc.co.uk over the next few months. The resources involved are massive and managing the process along with daily demands of the organisation are a challenging one but, Research Studios are confident that having worked in such a collaborative and inclusive way with internal teams, the BBC will be able to adopt, embrace and take forward the new GVL as it develops internally.
