Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2010

Research Studios has collaborated with the Royal Academy on their forthcoming identity and poster designs for the ever popular Summer Exhibition 2010, now in its
242nd year. Research Studios has a long relationship with London’s art and culture centres, having collaborated extensively with the Barbican, ICA and Somerset House. Naturally we were extremely excited to be asked to pitch and win the Summer Exhibition work at the RA.

Identity, poster concept, design and Art Direction were executed by Research Studios’ Nick Hard with photography by Jeff Knowles.

Over 11,000 people enter the RA’s Summer Academy show taking several gruelling days of selection by the panel, this year co-ordinated by Royal Academicians Stephen Chambers and David Chipperfield. The co-ordinator’s theme for this year’s show was ‘RAW’. Research Studios wanted to reflect the process of entering work and raw elements used in the packaging of entrants artwork through the ‘wrapping tape typography’ which also doubles up as this years ‘stamp’. The RA is the only venue for the Summer Show an iconic and unique part of the British Summer Season. The building and sculpture of Sir Joshua Reynolds in the RA’s forecourt form part of this summer pilgrimage made by the huge numbers who attend the show each year. The Sir Joshua Reynolds sculpture is the central photographic image by Knowles in this year’s campaign.

RA’s 242nd Summer Exhibition 2010 runs from 14th June – 22nd August 2010 and you can find out more about it here.
