Neville Brody – Head of Communication Art & Design RCA

Research Studios are pleased to announce that Neville Brody, Creative Director, has been appointed Head of the Department of Communication Art & Design at the Royal College of Art, taking up the position on 1 January 2011.

Following speculation and a fair amount of coverage online last week, the RCA made the following statement in confirming the appointment today;

“Brody’s appointment demonstrates the Royal College of Art’s commitment to embrace the creative challenges and opportunities in the rapidly moving discipline of communication art and design in the twenty first century.”

“Neville Brody is both an eloquent advocate and a superb practitioner,“ said Dr Paul Thompson, Rector of the Royal College of Art. “His design talent traverses so many different media – traditional print and typography through to online, motion graphics, and packaging. He is one of the most influential designers of his generation and perfectly captures the interdisciplinary ethos of the Department of Communication Art & Design.”

Over the last few years Brody has, alongside running Research Studios, increasingly taken a very keen interest in design and creative sector education in the UK. The appointment to the RCA marks a very interesting pivot point between dialogue (he has had with students, educators and industry) and truly getting involved in shaping world-leading programmes at the RCA. A delighted Brody comments;

“The Royal College of Art sits at the threshold of a new and vital moment in communications history, an extraordinary time and one that will deeply affect all of us. This appointment is an amazing opportunity to bring together several ideas and objectives, and to help the RCA take up a defining and influential place within this rapidly-changing world.

I am excited by this possibility of joining of the dots, of combining the RCA’s deep sense of history, craft and experience with a dynamic, relevant and exploratory approach to art and design communications.

The position is a great honour and challenge. The RCA is a centre of excellence for art and design, and is the de facto natural home for all visual communications.”
